چکیده

We show from density-functional calculations that Pb 100 thin films exhibit quantum size effect with a bilayer periodicity in film energies, film relaxations, and work functions, which originate from different symmetry of the stacking geometry of odd and even layer films. This symmetry-driven quantum size effect on the film energy could allow for growth of “magically” thick even-layer Pb 100 films on an appropriate substrate. Furthermore, it is found that the quantum well states in a simple metal film can be classified into -bonded and -bonded states, which quantize independently.

The Effect of pH on the Optical Band Gap of PbSe Thin Film with Usability in the Quantum Dot Solar Cell and Photocatalytic Activity

This study was an attempt to provide a simple solution processed synthesis route for Lead Selenide (PbSe) nanostructure thin films using the chemical bath deposition (CBD) method which is commercially available in inexpensive precursors. In the CBD method, the preparation parameters play a considerable role and determine the nature of the final product formed. Known as two main factors, the eff...

Self-organization of Pb thin films on Cu(111) induced by quantum size effects

Electron confinement in thin films of Pb on Cu(111) leads to the formation of quantum well states, formed out of the upper valence band of Pb. Their evolution as a function of film thickness is characterized in angle-resolved photoemission and can be interpreted in terms of a straightforward quantum well model. This permits an identification of film growth mode at low temperatures. Bringing the...

Quantum size effects in the low temperature layer - by - layer growth of Pb on Ge ( 001 )

The electronic properties of thin metallic films deviate from the corresponding bulk ones when the film thickness is comparable with the wavelength of the electrons at the Fermi level. This phenomenon, referred to as quantum size effect (QSE), is also expected to affect the film morphology and structure leading to the “electronic growth” of metals on semiconductors. Shuch effect may be observed...

Quantum size effect on adatom surface diffusion.

Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that the nucleation density of Fe islands on the surface of nanoscale Pb films oscillates with the film thickness, providing a direct manifestation of the quantum size effect on surface diffusion. The Fe adatom diffusion barriers were derived to be 204+/-5 and 187+/-5 meV on a 21 and 26 monolayer (ML) Pb film, respectively, by matching the kin...

Preparation of Nanocrystalline CdS Thin Films by a New Chemical Bath Deposition Route for Application in Solar Cells as Antireflection Coatings

Nanocrystalline cadmium sulfide thin films as antireflection materials for solar cells have been prepared by a new chemical solution deposition route in an aqueous medium at 50 °C. as-deposited thin films were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and optical absorption spectra. X-ray diffraction data indicated the formation of hexagonal na...
